9/30/81 Safeway Robbery


A 2,000-pound safe was stolen from the Hughes Road Safeway between midnight and 4:30 a.m. Sept. 24. The thieves apparently hoisted the safe through the front of the store, pictures, using some type of tow truck. The safe has not been recovered, and Houston police are investigating. The safe contained an undetermined amount of money. A smaller safe, which had been pried open, was found in the store's parking lot the same morning. An attempted theft of the store's safe was reported on Sept. 7, and a police spokesman said it was likely last week's theft was connected to the earlier attempt.
