A couple who was shot at while trying to pay respects to the family of a slain Vietnamese publisher early Firday night escape injury, but a stay bullet hit the car of a passing motorist, Frank Gonzales of Rainbow Valley. Gonzalez was not harmed.
According to police, three children residing at the home of Dam Phuong Nguyen, who was buried just hours before the shooting, were frightened when they saw the couple approcahing their home, and they began firing bullets at them. The couple fled to a neighbor's and awaited police.
The children were apparently upset over Nguyen's death and feared murderer was coming back to get them. They did not recognize the couple.
Nguyen, 48, was shot and stabbed repeatedly at his home on Southport Tuesday afternoon. Police have no leads in the case.
The victim's widow think he may have been killed by someone who disagreed with his anti-Communist writings in Tu Do, the Vietnamese language newspaper he published every two weeks.
The widow plans to continue publishing the paper, but she said she will steer clear of any controversy and stick to publishing translation of news of world events.
The police have not been able to confirm if Nguyen's murder was motivated by his writings, but they have ruled out robbery.
