From before the houses were built, the Beltway was planned. For years and years, we'd heard it was "coming" but the real evidence something might actually begin to get moving was the vacate order. But even that was one of those multiple push-back dates. In late summer of 1982 we'd gone from Feb. 26 to June 1 to Aug. 9.
Then in the August 12 paper, the date was August 15, with the laughable expectation that construction of the Beltway would begin six months later:
They did vacate that August, but the stations themselves were not dismantled for another six months.
And construction on the Beltway itself would be another six YEARS, not months, in the making.
