South Belt Houston Digital History Archive: Houston Area Yearbook Series: Restaurants

A collection of restaurant advertising (primarily those that ran photos of their establishments). The only exception to this is Farrell's, which never ran an ad in any yearbook, but whose pictures I grabbed anyway, as they were a long time beloved staple in Almeda Mall.

This category got a bit broad, as anything that did not fit into the diners, soda fountains, and drive-ins category, but served food, was housed here. This means the bakeries, donut, and ice cream shops, too.

As far as I know, only two remain in the same location: City Cafe in South Houston is still in operation at 513 College, as is the Tel-Wink Grill at 4318 Telephone Rd. Both have operating hours for breakfast and lunch only, with breakfast at both getting rave reviews.

1940 Baytown

Because it was one of the first restaurant ads in any of the yearbooks with a photo (and 2 at that!), I got a bit curious. The restaurant will change its name to the owners', Moreno's, and reappear in the Baytown yearbooks for years. Mrs. Moreno's obituary reports their restaurant began in 1926. She would have been 17. And above, in the photograph, she would be 31. And that, after her retirement from running her own restaurant, she enrolled in Lee College "at the tender age of 68" (1976) to become a certified seamstress!
