1981 Dawns: PISD South Belt slate elected in wake of coaching reassignments

One of the primary foci of The Leader was to report on elections, especially local, when no one else was. As 1981 started, the PISD School Board Election resulted in the swearing in of three South Belt residents, when prior to this there had not been a single resident to sit on the Board, testament to the growing population of the area. Dr. B.J. Garner, John Elam, and Rudy Shubert. It is also testament to the power of coaches. While one of the defeated candidates indicated his loss was primarily because he didn't live in the South Belt area, "I lived on Burke, not Beamer," many of the voters polled said they voted against the incumbents because of the unpopular coaching reassignments.

In 1980 only 370 people cast votes in the election at Dobie High School. In January of 1981? 1474 people showed up.

The day before this edition of the Leader, Ronald Reagan had been sworn in as the 40th President of the United States.

And the day before that, 52 American hostages were finally released from Iran after 14 months.
