7/23/80 Sand Pit Murder

The body of an unidentified female murder victim was found floating in the sandpit located directly behind Beverly Hill Park Friday afternoon.

The nude body had apparently been in the water for several days.
The victim had been strangled with an air compressor hose and then tied to a barrel0type barbecue pit with that same hose..

Homicide detectives called to the scene found no clues other than an additional piece of air compressor hose lying on the bank. No clothing was found.

Decomposition has made identification difficult, but an autopsy performed Saturday revealed additional information.

At five four, four inches in height, she weighed approximately 120 pounds. The victim had hazel eyes and shoulder length brown hair and was wearing an upper plate of dentures, the bottom plate presumably was lost. Also, she had had an appendectomy, according to Cecil Wingo, chief medical investigator.

As of press time, it had not been determined whether or not the victim was raped or beaten. According to homicide detective R. O. Olive, it would nearly impossible to determine rape.

Police officials said this is the sixth body found at the sandpit this year. There have been four drowning victims and one murder victim found in the lake-type sandpit in seven months.

Two children reported seeing what appeared to be a body Wednesday, but a dive team was unsuccessful in its efforts to find it later in the day.

Friday, three young men discovered the body as it surfaced while they were swimming in the area.
