1977 Overview (mostly)

Arg, flatbed limitations strike again. January had something going on with the a Civic Association, and students. . .  and yeah. I got nothing. Same goes for December. Sorry!)

It is interesting to see a roundup of the "big happenings" in the neighborhood at a glance.

February Highlights

  • 125 cars vandalized
  • Bad flu, but "not bad enough to close schools". Wait, did that ever happen??
  • Burnett Elementary opened

March Highlights

  • Congressman Gammage fights to keep Ellington AFB going
  • SVFD got an ATV and helped birth a baby. But not on the ATV.
  • Beverly Hills residents fought for street lights (really? There weren't lights in 1977?)
  • Scarsdale gets a single cop car and three cops

April

  • Tami Richardson qualifies for Nationals (gymnastics)
  • Sageglen gets a Civic Association
  • And lines are redrawn sending some Frazier students to Stuchberry instead

May

  • The largest graduating class to date, 390 students, graduate from Dobie
  • Pharmacist Joe Borja gets shot during a robbery
  • SVFD was getting prank called
  • Outbreak of measles
  • And more arguing over what's going to happen to Ellington AFB

June

  • Daytime burglaries are up and an elderly woman was mugged in front of the Safeway
  • Super turf is approved for installation in Memorial Stadium

July

  • HPD's Danny McBee is awarded for his actions that save a 17 year old Soult Belt resident

August

  • The Clear Lake annexation fight gets going
  • Scarsdale residents were told their water had so  much fluoride in it, their teeth might turn black. (This is why I posted the photo. You wouldn't believe me otherwise.)
  • HPD impounds the one cop car Scarsdale finally got because it was involved in an accident.
  • The PISD Budget is approved for 50,000,000 million dollars. I got curious about what it is today: almost $525,000,000.
  •  "The local City of Houston ambulance began a "here today, gone tomorrow" routine, which lasted two months."

September

  • Sagemeadow begins a neighborhood watch
  • High winds cause damage around the area

  • Scarsdale was under annexation discussions and all garbage pickup ceased.

November

  • Sherri Whitnah was Dobie Homecoming Queen
  • Vandals went around cutting trees
  • Sabo Townhomes burn

December
Something about baseball, a stop sign, and traffic signal happened.
